The Northstar Foundation

The Northstar Foundation has wide charitable goals with a particular focus on supporting entrepreneurship and social enterprises that benefit excluded and deprived communities in the North East of England.

Strategy

The Northstar Foundation is focusing on a small number of charitable commitments that we have already identified, so we are not generally in a position to respond to unsolicited requests for grants or donations.

Fresh Ideas Fund – North East

The Northern Rock Foundation has granted The Northstar Foundation £3m to continue the Fresh Ideas Fund (FIF) over the next three years.  The FIF is a grant programme to enable voluntary, community and social enterprises in the North East of England to explore new opportunities to help them grow in size, improve long term sustainability and increase their impact, through grants of up to £50,000.

The Community Foundation Serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland (the Community Foundation) is managing the FIF on behalf of The Northstar Foundation.  The Community Foundation will be working with Northstar Ventures which has worked with the Northern Rock Foundation to assist FIF recipients over the past three years.

There will be two FIF rounds for 2016, the first of which is ongoing. The deadline for applications to the second round will be announced in early summer 2016. For full details on how to apply, please visit www.communityfoundation.org.uk/freshideas

Fresh Ideas Fund – Cumbria

The Northern Rock Foundation has also granted The Northstar Foundation £500,000 to run the FIF programme in 2016 and 2017 in Cumbria.

The Cumbria Community Foundation will be managing the FIF on behalf of The Northstar Foundation.  The Cumbria Community Foundation will be working with Northstar Ventures which has worked with the Northern Rock Foundation to assist FIF recipients over the past three years.

The programme for 2016 will be launched in mid 2016.
